Central High Hockey to be quarterly event

The inaugural K300 000 Central High School Hockey Tournament has impressed the school’s administration to the extent that they have decided to make it a quarterly competition.

Central High School head teacher Nishant Mishra told The Nation at the end of the  day-long event last weekend that they will be bankrolling and hosting the youth competition at least three times a year.

“Certainly, we have been impressed with the standard of play among the young athletes and we will make it a quarterly event. We are currently discussing with Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) on how to go about it. For your information, we will come up with another event in September this year,” he said.

HAM general secretary Chigo Thindwa welcomed the development saying it will boost the morale among the youth.

“This is a generous offer from Central High School and we are very delighted with this partnership as it will go a long way in developing the sport,” Thindwa said.

During the inaugural contest, Scorpions beat St. Kizito Secondary School team 1-0 in the boys’ section while Kadish Academy beat St. Maria Goretti 2-0 to win the girls’ title.

Anthony Banda who  scored the lone goal, was voted the best player.

In the ladies’ category final, Kadish scored through Mary Phiri and Sphiwe Banda. Nevertheless, it was Central High School’s Taheer Mussa, who took the best player accolade.

According to Mishra, apart from hockey, they will also come up with a soccer tournament at the end of this month and bankroll volleyball, basketball, table tennis, chess and badminton competitions starting this September.
